A History of Emmanuel College, Cambridge
Author:  Sarah Bendall
Published:  1999
Medium: Book         Publisher:  Boydell & Brewer Ltd
Emmanuel College was founded by the royal minister Sir Walter Mildmay in 1584; he chose a leading moderate puritan, Laurence Chaderton, as first Master, and aimed to educate godly ministers and good preachers. This history presents its development from these beginnings to the present day. They show how the college's original puritan character gave way to the liberal views of the Cambridge Platonists and the high churchmanship of William Sancroft, instrumental in bringing Christopher Wren to design the new college chapel; and how during the nineteenth century, as with other Cambridge colleges, it expanded in numbers and disciplines, becoming once again a notable centre of theology, and for the first time the home of serious teaching in the natural sciences. It has had a role in all the movements of the twentieth century which have made Cambridge what it is today: in learning, teaching, sport, and social life. A special feature of the book is the substantial account of the history of the college estates and finances, on a scale never before attempted for an Oxbridge college.

College of Corpus Christi and of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Author:  A. Geoffrey Woodhead
Published:  1995
Medium: Book         Publisher:  Boydell & Brewer Ltd
This contribution to the recorded history of the college was originally intended as a continuation of Part II of Patrick Bury's work. It adopts the same form as that of its predecessor but uses it in order to convey, especially through the interlinked series of lives of the masters and fellows, a connected account of the college's fortunes and development during the four Masterships which carried Corpus through most of the second half of the twentieth century. Like its predecessor it includes accounts of the holders of the principal college offices and of the vicissitudes of the college livings; and it provides an alphabetical list of all members of the college admitted during the forty-two years it spans. Extracts from the Statutes relevant to the Fellowship explain the terms and conditions under which Fellows have been elected and admitted, and the changes in them that have taken place.

History of Queens' College, Cambridge 1448-1986
Author:  John Twigg
Published:  1987
Medium: Book         Publisher:  Boydell & Brewer Ltd
Queens' has the unique distinction of being the foundation of two queens. The development of the college in its early years took place in a political climate unsettled by the Wars of the Roses; the religious changes of the following century saw the college become a centre of humanist learning. Two of the great humanists of the age were both members of the college, and Queen's theatre was noted for its plays, always a part of humanist education. The consolidation of the college's fortunes took place against the more stable climate of the late 16th-early 17th century, reflected in the growing grandeur of presidential lifestyles and the temptations of monarchs to interfere in collegeelections. The interruption of civil war and revolution was succeeded by a period of Whig liberalism, itself brought to an abrupt end by the arch-evangelical president Isaac Milner. The Victorians shaped the modern university: reforming fellows devoted themselves to their colleges and their students, and for the first time an academic profession arose. To bring the story up to date, John Twigg charts the changes of the 20th century: the new political awareness and the pressures it has brought with it, and the continuing complexity of running the college. The history of any college is essentially made by its fellows and students, and they are not neglected: John Twigg draws revealing portraits and relates the anecdotes that are the stuff of college life while unfolding the absorbing history of Queens'.   hardback   ISBN 978-0-851-15488-6

The College of Corpus Christi and of the Blessed Virgin Mary A History from 1822 to 1952
Author:  Patrick Bury
Published:  1995
Medium: Book         Publisher:  Boydell & Brewer Ltd
This history, originally published on the occasion of the Sexcentenary of the College in 1952, carries on the story first told by Masters (1753) and Lamb (1831), and brings it down to the mid-twentieth century, Mastership by Mastership. It deals with a period of great changes during which a Whig Society turned Tory, flourished as a stronghold of Evangelicalism, and was for a time the third largest College in the University. The book goes on to describe thedecline which set in at the end of the nineteenth century, the break with the Low Church tradition, and the Renaissance which began under new leadership shortly before the First World War and continued after it. It says somethingof the effect upon the College of the great University reforms of the period, and it attempts to give some picture of social conditions, and the way of life of the ordinary undergraduate. The volume also includes lives of all the Fellows active in the College between 1822 and 1952, notes on College livings, an account of the holders of College offices, and an alphabetical list of all members of the College admitted between 1822 and 1950.   hardback   ISBN 978-0-851-15612-5
