The processes by which medieval urban communities were formed and developed can be clearly seen in this study of Coventry. This is a wonderfully detailed topographical description of the towns and villages in the County of Warwick and it contains a mine of information for family historians. For each place it includes historical notices, details of public buildings, the ancient manorial customs and information about the different types of agriculture, industry and commerce. There are also some exceedingly detailed maps and many beautiful illustrations of the notable places in Warwickshire.

The original Gentleman's Magazine contained articles on a vast array of subjects, including lots of wonderful topographical pieces. In 1891 George Gomme republished all of these topograhical articles but edited and indexed them into county specific order. Each of Gomme's works contains between two and four separate counties. An absolute goldmine of information about the county, its people and its places.

This book is volume one of a calendar of the episcopal register of Bishop Walter Langton (1296-1321). Langton's register is important for two reasons: it is the earliest extant register for the medieval diocese of Coventry and Lichfield, and it has shed new light on the life of one of the period's key political figures. The register contains some folios from an earlier working register, only some entries of which have been duplicated in the definitivecopy. These have been tabulated in the introduction, which discusses the arrangement of the whole register in detail. A huge directory covering Warwickshire in 1940. One of the great advantages of a "late" directory such as this is that it is so easy to trace heads of household either by name or street address. (In the main towns each street, and every numbered house is there, together with the head of household and their occupation). Don't think of it as being just a 1940 resource. You will find all branches of your family and their addresses, and then go look at those same addresses in all earlier resources.
