| Faculty Office records search by Last and/or First Name of Bride, Last and/or First Name of Groom and Year Range of allegation.
Vicar-General records search by Applicant Last Name, Other Party Last Name and Year Range of allegation. Applicant for licence was usually the groom, but not always. NOTE: Vicar-General records do NOT contain first names. |
| Choosing the year range |
| Bear in mind that the marriage will have occurred (assuming it took place)
later than the date of the licence, and could have been in the following year,
especially if the licence was dated late in the year. It is advisable to allow
at least one year extra in your search period. eg. searching for a
marriage which took place in 1756, enter a year range of 1755 to 1756. |
| Forename abbreviations |
| In Faculty Office records forenames of bride and groom are frequently
abbreviated, eg. For brides: C'e (short for Caroline or Charlotte?), Charl'e,
Eliz'th, M'y, Sar'h, Sus'h. For grooms: Alex'r,
Benj'n, Cha's, Dan'l, Edw'd, etc. Our
recommendation is enter just the first initial of the forename.

| Anomalies where brides & grooms names mixed up |
|
The name appearing first is the person who applied for the licence, often the groom. However, you may find some anomalies where brides appear to have men's names, and vice versa. This probably is the result of an error made either by the clerk who originally created the record, or by the transcriber.
If you do find any such records we would appreciate it if you would let us know. |
