Surname variations
No attempt has been made to 'standardise' surnames. In using the index be aware of all possible variations and to scroll through to find obscure variants. In particular surnames should be checked with and without the 'O' and 'Mc' and letters that are phonetically similar, such as 'C' and 'K' and 'i' and 'y' should be crosschecked.

Gaelic and latin
The use of Gaelic on gravestones is found from the late 19th century. In Gaelic vowels and consonants can have accents, however, a suitable modern typeface has not yet been developed. Therefore, all consonant accents are replaced with a 'h' immediately after the consonant. 'H' is rarely used in Gaelic and can be ignored in the index.
Latin is mostly found on gravestones to Roman Catholic clerics. Surnames are never latinised but Christian names are usually given in their Latin form.

Place names
For Irish place names the county is not identified unless mentioned. For places outside Ireland, the modern country has been identified. However, many countries have had frontier changes or came into being over the last 200 years. It has been assumed that all references to 'America' refer to the USA rather than any other country in the Americas.
