| Surname spelling |
The transcribed entries in this index have not been corrected or the spelling standardised. Particular surnames had a wide variety of spellings current at the time (1851) and the user should take this into account when using the index. However, the use of our NameX name variant software will ensure that relevant records are found regardless of the spelling used for searching.
Chart recorded some surnames twice, with and without the O' or M[a]c qualification, so you should not need to be concerned whether these suffixes were used or not.
The Chart index is hand-written (see examples, which made some entries difficult to interpret. Sometimes alternatives readings of the surname were recorded by Chart, and these are included in the computerised index and shown in the records in the records (eg "Kearns (Cairns)"). The 1851 Thom's Directory was used to clarify and correct some of Chart's entries; alternative surname spellings found in Thom's have also been included in the index (eg "Brennan (Bannon in Thom's") All such alternative names are searchable.
